- Gion is a representative shopping and entertainment district in Kyoto. Gion developed as a temple town of Yasaka Shrine along Shijo-dori from the Kamogawa River to Todaiji-dori/Yasaka Shrine. It is one of Kyotofs few entertainment districts (famous for its maiko), and with its rows of lattice gate houses, is an area which is said to feel most like Kyoto. The northern area extending along Shinbashi-dori to Shirakawa has been designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Historic Buildings, and the southern region surrounding Hanamikoji has been designated as one of Kyoto cityfs Historic Environment and Town Development districts. The traditional cityscape is still existent today.
